You mean move freely? While playing a recorded demo?

I forgot, but I think it was a command in the console.

Or I may be wrong.

I have little experience with player recorded demos, everytime I try to use them, I can't make it go free look mode even if I click drive in "demoui", pausing it, letting it play, no matter what it wont work for me. Roger Dogood got it working I think, but discovered it wont draw you, if you have the intel its just a trail of papers but nobody holding anything, etc..

The main issue I've been having was letting the buffer empty afterwards. How will I know when it's okay to leave the game?

Edit: To be more specific, I've been getting this message when I try to open the .avi in VirtualDub.
Reconstructing Index Block (Aggressive Mode). Then I try to play it and its only a part of the vid.

I get that message all the time in virtualdub, but its always able to read it no problem.
I looked into 'buffering' real quick, and there's filesystem_buffer_size cvar, but its set to 0 by default, which is off.

Well, it seems to be fixed now (or at least workable). Must remember that I don't have the full process committed to memory.

I just wanted to tell a tip about the free roaming mode in SourceTV demos :
- You can use the Swim Up/Swim Down keys (in the bindings, go to config) to go up and down just like it was a complement for the WASD keys (useful because now, you're not forced to look up to go up).
- You can use "sv_specaccelerate" to change the diving speed of the camera.

Another thing I discovered when I made the last video, after a few minutes, the avi gets unusable, there's some max file size or something going on. In those cases I do the lots of TGA file option, there's still a limit to those, but its a lot longer. Either way you can't record too much.

I have a problem with viewing demos. They play fine but I'm stuck to a viewpoint somewhere below the ground and can't move or anything. The buttons noted in the top border do nothing (except space, which brings up the demo menue rather than what it says).

Anyone got an idea how to fix this?

I can't seem to record videos properly passed a certain length. After about a minute, the recorded video just breaks completely and when I run it in Virtualdub, only a few seconds of the video plays.

AVI maxes out because you cant go more than like 4G or something.
Did you try the TGA option? That will let you go longer, but even that still maxes out after a long time like 10 minutes, because the filenames only have like 4 digits.
Another way I havent tried yet is get divx, then I think you can choose it as a codec instead of uncompressed, and that shouldn't max out for a long time, if for some reason you need to record long clips.

Hmm. Okay, I'm wondering if there's a way to compile together several clips from different demos or even the same one, while the clips are at different times without having to record the huge chunk of time in-between. Like, if I record a clip, then stop the recording, then start it at the 2nd clip, will the avi be in two parts or one? If two, is there a way to put them together as one avi like in the nomtages?

well you could stop recording, then rename the avi, then start again, thats what I do.
and btw the avi thing really sucks for the time limit, I've been hitting it a lot more often lately and have to resort to the tga method.

When I start playing the GUI the screen remains black - the text and everything comes up okay, as well as the sound, but theres no graphics of the actual gameplay?

Never seen that before.. If you close out the GUI and click the mouse, it should snap to the perspective of a player, maybe youre stuck in a view where its off the map.

I'm not trying to make a video from a demo, but rather I'm having problems playing back a demo

I was trying to watch some footage of a cheater, and after downloading and unzipping the file into my main tf folder, and starting tf2 this happens:

I type demoui in the console, as i've done before

I choose the file(it's the only demo file there)

it starts loading, and then just goes back to the main screen, it won't play for me

I tried redownloading incase it was corrupted, but no luck

Try typing "play" in console then use the arrow keys to scroll down to the demo you're trying to look at. That's how I load mine and it works every time.

I'm sorry I mean "playdemo" then hit space and a list should come up.

Argh. Ninja edit. Well, you've already said it was in the tf folder...usually that's enough for it to pop up.

I went ingame, and apparently the update makes old demos no longer viewable

and apparently my mic died
might just be fixed by restarting steam though
