    ...and It Made Me Smile

Stress over 4th year university dissertation writing, waiting to hear back from an interviewer about a PhD application... But I managed to get up early today and do some walking/bird watching, feels good! I used to be quite clued up on my ornithology when I was younger but now nearly everything looks the same. Embarrassing but it was good to see so many species.

And then you end up choosing the same few letter answer for all accounts, negating most of the actual security aspect of them. If it asks you for 3 random letters (eg. what is letter 3, letter 5, letter 6) of your answer, you end up choosing one which is less than around six long so that you don't end up counting on your fingers every time... or at least I do. And the obligatory 0 or 1 at the end of your usual password if it requires a least one number.

State of the Sandvich: November 2014

I don't think it will ever get back to the peak of its popularity, as it was a few years ago. Now it's due to a lot of factors such as the main playerbase becoming older, having more responsibilites and so less time to play, and not forgetting that TF2 itself is 7 years old. But I know most people aren't expecting it to get back to that level, the majority would probably just want the occasional hour or so to catch up with people they haven't played with in ages. The problem with a community at that sort of stage is that if everyone isn't exactly actively playing but instead wants to pop in for a few rounds a few times a month or less, it's unlikely that the server will already be full enough to bother. I know a few times in the past I've been overtaken by nostalgia and when I've gone to check on the server at peak times it's been empty, and I don't often have the time to join and wait for people to join in turn. Even checking my friends list which has quite a few old regulars, not many play TF2 at any point at all that I see. But I wouldn't give up on it. It's strange to think that I was 16 when I first started playing on nom, now 21 and I sunk many hours and had a lot of fun over the course of the year and a half I remained a regular. I would definitely be up for even the monthly session if I knew that the server would have at least a handful of people on it. Now I may be wrong in assuming that the place is dead 24/7 but from my experience the last few times I've played TF2 it's definitely been that way. I think the only real solution in this case would be to schedule a couple of times each month at reasonable hours that people could join knowing there'd be people playing. This reeks of forcing things a bit but it's better than stagnation. Once again I know at this point I haven't been anything near a regular in around three years and over the last year have probably only played less than a handful of times with you lot, so my experience of the situation may be skewed. Maybe it is active for a couple of days a week or something, I don't know,

Ah, teenage years you have served me relatively well but I must bid you farewell. It's weird that having lived for two decades makes me feel old, but also very very young at the same time. And like everyone else said, a social night out once in a while can be good but as long as you're happy being by yourself, it shouldn't be anyone else's business.

I had my sound off and I swear I was stupidly sat there waiting for some sort of animation. Although it makes sense, animated GIFs aren't exactly going to get that reaction

I really hate it when there's that person who has to broadcast everything that they do to everyone. I'm not talking the usual 'had breakfast' or 'just watched ____,' I mean any little thing that can be taken as a positive in their daily life. You've lost a few pounds over the last week? You're getting ready to do one last hour of revision and you've provided an instagrammed cup of tea on top of your notes? But I don't hate that person on a personal level for doing these things. I hate how as a society we're all so dependent on giving people a positive mental image of ourselves constantly, how we can no longer feel self-satisfied when we grow as a person unless that growth is also witnessed by at least 20 other people, and they've given us the proverbial thumbs up, and we can carry on our way. It's pathetic and seriously contributes to the mental fragility that our way of living creates.

So Margaret Thatcher has finally died. The overall response has been almost 100% pure unadulterated joy among everyone I've seen, but I guess that's what you expect when you completely write off a city and almost beg to be disliked.

Yeah I've got nothing wrong with April Fools day because it's fine if you treat absolutely everything with disbelief. But you end up getting caught out for about a week afterwards when the links stick around for ages *rage*

    ...and It Made Me Smile

I've been racking my brains for ages now trying to figure out how to start up a low-maintenance musical project with a mate, and it seems we've actually come to some sort of an agreement. We're going to start up an artist collective revolving around music which is considered lo-fi, DIY, novelty, electronic, or unconventional in any way. I guess the plan so far is just to release any sort of music for free online with the option of making a physical copy of each release by providing the necessary material for booklets, covers, etc. It actually feels really, really exciting to have something lined up at last. Also, I guess that means that if anyone on here is currently involved in a project like that or was thinking of starting one up, it might be a good way to pool any resources and get some sort of buzz out. I say this because I've seen that a lot of people on nom have quite a diverse and interesting taste in music from what I've seen.

Good to see all of the love for music on here. Talking of music, as time goes by I find myself drawn simultaneously towards more chaotic, noisy and aggressive music AND more mellow softer stuff. If I get off my arse and start writing some music like I keep telling myself I will, it'll be interesting to say the least.
