Steam Has Been Hacked

Recommended Posts

Dear Steam Users and Steam Forum Users:

Our Steam forums were defaced on the evening of Sunday, November 6. We began investigating and found that the intrusion goes beyond the Steam forums.

We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.

We don’t have evidence of credit card misuse at this time. Nonetheless you should watch your credit card activity and statements closely.

While we only know of a few forum accounts that have been compromised, all forum users will be required to change their passwords the next time they login. If you have used your Steam forum password on other accounts you should change those passwords as well.

We do not know of any compromised Steam accounts, so we are not planning to force a change of Steam account passwords (which are separate from forum passwords). However, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to change that as well, especially if it is the same as your Steam forum account password.

We will reopen the forums as soon as we can.

I am truly sorry this happened, and I apologize for the inconvenience.

Gabe.

Gentlemen, better change your passwords.

Steam was not hacked.

Steam's community forums were. Big difference, unless you were stupid enough to use the same username and password on the forums as your steam account.

OH NOOOOOOOO... Well, time to change all the passwords again. Who knew 2011 would be known as the year where the gaming industry gets hacked.

Wait... but it makes an actual distinction between the forum accounts and "Steam Accounts". I'm confused. Doesn't by "Steam account" he mean actual Steam? Also, it said that the database contained card information, billing addresses and other things.

My point exactly. Your SPUF profile won't contain any purchase information; only your Steam client would.

Well, password was secure enough that I do have some time to think of a good, new one.

This also seems like a perfect opportunity to perform that password audit I've been putting off.

So yeah, you guys should change your passwords.

From what I recall there was a message advertising some hacks that wouldn't be detected by VAC on the forums at one point, which could be related to this.

One thing that saddens me is the number of people immediately crying out for a freebie from Valve or predicting free hats in TF2. Because they deserve free shit from Valve for the inconvenience or something. Priorities, what are those?

What is priority? A miserable pile of [redacted]

Anywho, let's hope this doesn't persist. Valve doesn't deserve it for all they've done throughout the years.

I never, ever, entered the Steam forums, but since it goes a little beyond than that...

Well, changing password. Better safe than sorry, and it's not that much of a problem.

Is 26 characters long enough?

Hoho.

So even if you never touch the Steam forums, you should change your Steam account password anyways? I just want to make sure.

I'm just happy they had the credit card info encripted, I always change my passwords every now and then so nothing else worries me.
