GamerGate and journalist corruption thread

Recommended Posts

Here's a nice, sophisticated, academic overview of the GG episode of Law and Order.

Bonus:

hearing them say "women in gaming" made me feel like when someone says "l o l" or "meme" it gives me that kind of cringe.

Oh that feels good.

I hope Wu does something batshit enough to get her ass thrown in jail (barring harm come to anyone). Also glad that Lizzy's getting some work.

It's legitimately getting worrisome that she's going to get someone seriously hurt over this.

Mark Kern, who was the lead on quite a few big Blizzard titles have taken to speaking up for Gamergate, and encouraging other devs to do the same.

Jonathan Blow has come out against, ofcourse. In the process calling all games... porn? "the onus is on us to make more things that are worth a reasonable person’s time." In order to get the complete ending for your game, Blow, you had to stand in one spot for 2 fucking hours. Practice what you preach.

And a friendly reminder about the leadership of GDC.

I don't even know what to say about this without using all-caps and swearing except that I'm never playing Psychonauts or any game he so much as sneezed on ever again.

I believe you confuse "war on gamers" with "critique of games" and death threats of critics.

So wait, the anti crowd is twisting the angle again? I thought they were still going on about keeping women out of video games. Or was it about lack of diversity? No no wait, it was definitely because they didn't like that site's reviews.

And yet, even though Gamergate has kept the same angle since the beginning, targeting corruption and collusion, they still delude themselves. God damn, if you're going to be in an argument, at least figure out what you're arguing.

This makes me more frustrated than it should.

Anytime anyone tries to do that, someone just needs to cite that bit of information where Kotaku admitted what it was really about.

Long time no see, thread.

Gamergate has been blamed for why Sucker Punch failed... yep, we're now taking the blame for stuff that happened years before Gamergate was a thing.

Editor of MCV UK is calling gamers entitled for... wanting Bloodborne on PC. Actually, more than that. I will never understand how these people are capable of getting a job in an industry they hate so much, it makes no sense. Get a career that's right for you, being this angry all the time should be a sign this isn't good for you.

Gamespot's Danny O'Dwyer on Gamergate. "There are real barrier to press freedom that exist. There are real issues to consumer choice that exist. Paid for exclusives. Paid for previews. Paid for streams. Undisclosed sold Programming. Review Events. These are very real issues that need attention. But I guess none of them are sexy enough, right?" You do realize that that's your job? And that's why Gamergate has become a thing? You're a journalist for god sake, THIS IS YOUR JOB. You can't point to Gamergate and say "WHY ARE YOU GUYS NOT COVERING THIS", why aren't you!?

Brianna Wu actually followed through and met a Gamergate supporter and had a pleasant discussion. Good on her. Ofcourse her followers didn't feel the same way. She ended up losing about 1k patreon bux and has since backpedaled out of it.

Yeah, I wonder about people who get into an industry they hate. Fortunately, in some sad kind of way, it's not just a gaming journalism thing (coughpoliticianscough).

They got into journalism and couldn't cut it covering other things, so they came to games.  Games journalism is really the bottom of the barrel.  That's why we get all these shitcocks.  Not even tabloids would take them, they're that bad.  And now with the rise of youtubers and other actual competition doing better games content, they have to resort to click baiting and outrage mining in order to drive traffic.

so these journalists who couldn't get a job where they wanted have to resort to bad journalism to keep a job.

I do feel it's important to stress that not all game journalists are bad and it's not fair to them all to assume that all game journalists are just rejects from general news.

But yeah, fuck the ones who just stir up drama to make themselves important.

Over at the Calrgary Expo the Honey Badgets set up a Gamergate booth. Would it surprise you it got shut down? And a majority of people at the booth were women? Apparently "go home gamergirl" is perfectly acceptable when they're the ones saying it. More info here.

A new Mortal Kombat character is gay, and... apparently Gamergate is upset about it? I mean, they have no sources but Listen and Believe you guys! Also "Overall, the reaction to Kung Jin being revealed as a gay man has been mostly positive from the gaming community." way to contradict yourself in your own article. And an extra: "Kung Jin is a favorite in the Mortal Kombat games, and among those in the gaming community." ...his debut was in Mortal Kombat X.

TotalBiscuit claims he's just not into Titan Souls. The artist who works on the game, gets overjoyed by this, and pins it on his fridge. TotalBiscuit creates a soundcloud explaining why he now feels he can't cover Titan Souls fairly, so he won't. Kotaku writes about this, effectively calling TB overly emotional and extoling the great ethics* that Kotaku has. TotalBiscuit decides to answer their complete set of interview questions.

Polygon writer buys the LegoDimensions domain a day before the game is properly announced, making it instead redirect towards the Polygon article. People naturally get upset, and he folds faster than Superman on laundry day, likely due to fear of the upcoming Lego lawsuit. Good work, keep pissing off the developers!

And if you missed it, the Pillars of Eternity shitshow.

Figure I might as well make a second post for this. Gamergate had a meetup, in DC! Milo Yiannopoulos and Christina Hoff Summers was there, as well as somewhere around 200 people! Aaaand... it had to get shut down due to a bomb threat. Surprisingly, Kotaku and the like covered it, unsurprisingly they painted it in a bad light and in some cases blamed Gamergate! Or even claimed it was a valid way to make a statement...

Note, that comment about bomb threads being a valid statement? Approved by Kotaku, Pinsofs? Still in the approval process.

Just to rekindle the fire, Eron Gjoni (the one who created the original "Zoe Post") was shadowbanned sitewide from Reddit after asking for small donations to his legal funds required to challenge his gag order placed on him by Zoe Quinn.

Interestingly enough, thanks to the Striesand effect caused by his shadowban, he actually went over his $15k stretch goal.
